X-Plane 12 Africa Tour: Emergency Return to Bamako (GABS) After IRS Failure on MD-11

1. Flight Overview & Emergency Scenario

Welcome to a dramatic Leg 4 of our African Cargo Tour! Shortly after departing Bamako–Sénou International Airport (GABS) for Abidjan in the Rotate MD-11, an unexpected system emergency forced an immediate return. Shortly into the climb, a critical failure occurred within the IRS (Inertial Reference System), crippling the widebody's primary navigation guidance. In accordance with standard operating procedures, flight operations were aborted, and an emergency turnback to Bamako was executed under X-Plane 12.

2. Flight Data & Emergency Technical Specifications

  • Departure Airport: Bamako–Sénou International (GABS) - Mali

  • Destination (Planned): Abidjan Félix-Houphouët-Boigny (DIAP) - Ivory Coast

  • Diversion / Return: Emergency Return to Bamako (GABS)

  • Aircraft Model: Rotate McDonnell Douglas MD-11 Cargo

  • Flight Simulator: Laminar Research X-Plane 12

  • Emergency Event: IRS Alignment Loss / Navigation System Failure

  • Livery: Federal Express (FedEx)

3. Cockpit Systems & Realism: Handling the Failure in X-Plane 12

Operating the Rotate MD-11 during an avionics emergency in X-Plane 12 tests every aspect of flight simulation skill:

  • System Alert & Diagnostics: Failure warning on the EAD (Engine and Alert Display) indicating loss of inertial reference data, causing the NAV guidance and flight director modes to disconnect.

  • Manual Flight Control: Reverting to raw data navigation and backup attitude indicators to stabilize the heavy cargo jet using X-Plane 12’s realistic flight dynamics.

  • Emergency Procedures: Executing QRH (Quick Reference Handbook) checklists, attempting IRS alignment resets, and coordinating an immediate return vector back to Bamako.

  • Overweight Landing Considerations: Managing fuel weight and calculating landing performance to ensure a safe touchdown back on Bamako’s main runway.

4. Watch the Emergency Landing & What’s Next

Thanks to precise emergency handling and stabilization, the FedEx MD-11 landed safely back on the runway at Bamako (GABS). Maintenance teams are currently inspecting the IRS units before we attempt the journey to Abidjan once again.

✈️ Watch the full emergency flight video embedded above to see how the system failure was handled in the cockpit!
